About

Foreword: 4am I did Creative writing at Uni, which I am convinced knocked the true creativity ut of my writing. Helen Garner called my style ‘Garrulous’.

Thanks to the tremors of Parkinsons and problems with my spine, I usually write on phone or tablet, lying flat. It is now a slow process as I have had to type it one letter carefully at a time, where my fingers used to fly over the keyboard. The Parkies is sending my finger jumping to the ńext letter all the time so I have to s top and correct almost every word, especially over four letters, which does impede the flow. My new iPhone has a drag keyboard that I am learning to master but it interferes with concentration so Writing just 1000 words takes hours now.

For someone who did Creative writing at Uni it should roll off my tongue but at 3.30am it is lurking. I had to type it on letter âa time because the Parkies is sending my finger to the ńext letter all the time so I have to s top and correct almost every. My new iPhone has a drag keyboard that I am learning to master so í to interferes with concentration so Writing just 1000 words takes hours now. Dictation is still a problem then you have to concentrate on speaking slowly and clearly and not run away with what you are thinking or you come up with a completely different paragraph to what was in your mind/was on my mind. Having said that I have just dictated the last paragraph slowly and clearly and it seems to be okay perhaps it’s just when I am /at the timer for the day and my throat is really 💤 she just did it in that last photo no that should say paragraph/. Śee what I mean? Guess I won’t be ‘doing a Tolstoy a after all since I am still prevaricating training my dragon (dictation program . Dictation is still a problem. You haved. A picture speaks a thousand words. I will talk about a thousand things; tell you things I did, people I met, what I ate, what has annoyed or amused me, but I dont really tell you about me, the mee who has been carried around from pillar to,post wondering when it will never end. The one who gets me up in the morning to take on another day, reigns me in at tge last minute, puts songs in my head, points kut sunsets, cares about people.

The Editor at her desk in Scotland 1956

I like that me, she likes being quiet. Likes being alone. Loves her loved ones, no matter what. She gets sad, but not for long. She will fight for her rights, is very astute on judging character. She is not a happy person, but she is not unhappy. She ses the funny side of life, and good in most people, but the very few people who crossed her still bear the scars – and they never saw it coming. Only a handful of friends really know her, and they go back decades. Loyalty is highly valued. She is actually very shy, but learned early on from a teenage magazine that you may think people ade looking at you, but actually they are loking past you, or through you, and thinking about themselves.

And somewhere in ‘Bunty’ her fourteen year old self learned you can be someone else. That you have to walk into a room thinking ‘I am special, or great, or beautiful (“oh no you’re not – oh yes I am) and people fesponded well to that aura, and that persona grew. “Life and soul of the party!” my Dad once said. That persona is exhausting. It is great when she switches off. She’s OK though – just tiring.

But someone sussed me out. “Really, you spend most of the time at0 a party on the outside, observing, or in the kitchen filling up trays, or putting on the records (it was that long ago.) Well I bore easily.

Lastly, I was born in England. Scottish strong father (like Sean Conery/Clark Gable), dainty English mother (like the Queen)Grew up in Scotland. Second school was in Alloway, round the corner from historic poyet (sic), Robert Burns (big influence). Loved ice skating, the seashore at Ayr, dancing classes (major influence), saturday morning kids cinema at the Odeon, opposite Burn’s statue in the square. Did everything in a group of neighbour’s kids whose Dad’s all worked at he same place.

Totaly broken-hearted when we were uprooted to England. Totally different language and culture.

. Got on with it, but was always referred to as Scottish:” This is Eunice English, whose Scottish” ha ha. Darlington, then Worksop, a mining and market town. Caught school bus to Retford each day. 8am-6pm, with younger sister (schoolmate of the daughter of one of the duchesses).

Discovered the joys of dancing to Roy Dwayne and the Roamers at the Palais de Dance. Music by Cliff Richard and the Shadows, Elvis, two year’s later the Beatles. Had major, innocent, unrequited crushes on the drummer and the bass guitarist. (Still great friends with the lead guitarist, who I met up with again in 2007. He is a very special friend, and Good Influence)

Around 16th birthday met brother of school friend at bus stop. (Heathcliffe, Wuthering zheights). Moody. Didnt dance. Into stereo and Collecting LP’s to play on the new HiFi sfereo.
